第8回『Bucketman and Dirty Person』

『Bucketman and Dirty Person』

After being humiliated by Bucketman yet once again, after hearing the most boring thing ever, straight from the mouth of the notorious Boring Man, Ninja Janitor was in a sorry state indeed. To top it all off, he was in prison, the dirtiest place in the dirtiest part of town. Although all prisoners had to work, although they desperately needed a good janitor, because of his supervillain history, the jailers didn’t allow Ninja Janitor near any cleaning equipment.

Being separated from the one thing he loved—cleaning—was too much to bear. As the other prisoners teased him, he began to change, on the inside first, then on the outside. “You’re no Ninja Janitor,” the prisoners would say. “You’re just a dirty… person.”

The man once known as Ninja Janitor was broken on the inside. He hadn’t exactly forgotten all his ninja training, but still he felt completely helpless, and saw no point in resisting the grime he hated any more. He complied with every order given to him, no matter how much he disliked it, and let dirt cling to him without complaint. His one slight pleasure in life was cleaning his plate, eating all of the low-grade prison food placed before him, in spite of the terrible gas it gave him. He became a model prisoner, and so was released much earlier than one might expect of someone once convicted of a ninja-themed crime spree.

Upon leaving prison, this dirty person was homeless for a while, but eventually found work as a garbage man. The grime of it all no longer bothered him, and given his rap sheet, he knew no one would hire him again as a janitor. (His ninja skills had deteriorated from lack of use to the point that no one would hire him as a ninja, either.) It was in his garbage man jumpsuit, walking home from work one night, that he bumped into his archnemesis Bucketman. They were both waiting at a crosswalk.

The former Ninja Janitor had changed so much that Bucketman didn’t even recognize him. Before his long imprisonment, Ninja Janitor wouldn’t have hesitated to attack the hero with an overturned bucket for a helmet, but now, the dirty person was more than a bit nervous… afraid, even. And whenever he was nervous, the gas from the terrible food he had become used to eating—it was just about all he could afford now—bubbled up fiercely in his gut. He couldn’t suppress it. A horrendous burp exploded from his throat.

“What a nasty belch!” exclaimed Bucketman, who felt suddenly light-headed. “Who are you to have such a nefarious odor?”

“I’m just a Dirty Person,” he answered, and as he did so, he took notice of Bucketman, drawing away, unable to deal with the smell. Dirty Person began to think that perhaps his super-awful burps could be just as much of a superpower as his former ninja janitorial skills.

Before he got too far with the thought, though, Bucketman had popped a breath mint in Dirty Person’s mouth. “Here, have this,” Bucketman said helpfully. “I just got back from dinner, and had an extra mint.”

Dirty Person choked for a moment on the mint, spit it up into his mouth, then found himself instinctively chewing and swallowing. His mouth, his throat, felt… clean. Bucketman, thinking nothing of the encounter, had crossed the street, but Dirty Person found himself unable to move for a moment.

Clean… He had missed it so much, but it felt so foreign. And kindness… from his archnemesis. There was a knot now tied in Dirty Person’s stomach: he was confused, immobilized.

“Curse you, Bucketman!” Dirty Person shouted across the street. “You win again!”
Bucketman, a little confused himself, shook his head inside his bucket-helmet, and walked away.
